Live-Action Moana Finds Its Star: 17-Year-Old Catherine Laga’aia Takes on the Iconic Role

Disney has officially announced the lead for its highly anticipated live-action remake of Moana, and the role has gone to 17-year-old Catherine Laga’aia, a rising actress from Sydney, Australia. The casting has generated excitement worldwide, as the young performer brings authentic Pacific Island representation to one of Disney’s most beloved modern heroes.

A New Face with Deep Cultural Roots

Catherine Laga’aia, who proudly embraces her Samoan heritage, expressed joy at being chosen to portray Moana, a character celebrated for her courage, leadership, and connection to Polynesian culture. Her family’s roots trace back to Fa‘aala, Palauli in Savai‘i through her grandfather and Leulumoega Tuai in ‘Upolu through her grandmother.
Despite being new to major film roles, Catherine has acting experience, including appearing in the Prime Video series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. Her selection aligns with Disney’s ongoing commitment to culturally authentic casting.

Auli’i Cravalho Supports the New Casting

Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 animated classic, confirmed she will not reprise the role in the live-action version. Instead, she joins the project as an executive producer, saying she is honored to “pass the baton” to a new young Pacific Island actress. Her involvement ensures the remake maintains the spirit and integrity of the original film.

Dwayne Johnson Returns as Maui

One of the most celebrated cast confirmations is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who will return to play Maui, the charismatic demigod. Johnson voiced Maui in the animated film and has been an active supporter of the live-action adaptation since its announcement.

Supporting Cast and Crew

Disney has also revealed more cast members:

  • John Tui as Chief Tui, Moana’s father
  • Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother, Sina
  • Rena Owen as Gramma Tala

The live-action adaptation is directed by Thomas Kail, best known for directing Hamilton and Fosse/Verdon. His involvement signals a grounded yet vibrant reimagining of the story.

Release Date

Disney has scheduled the live-action Moana for July 10, 2026, with production currently underway.

A Legendary Story Set for a Fresh Wave

The original animated Moana became a global hit for its music, visuals, and heartfelt story about identity, bravery, and navigating one’s destiny. With Catherine Laga’aia now officially stepping into the title role, anticipation is building to see how Disney brings this ocean-spanning adventure to life once again—this time in a new, visually immersive form.
